He built a cabin on the banks of the river and named it after his home town, Walesboro, Georgia. Other pioneers followed suit and soon there were many cabins and homes dotting the gentle slopes below Wauconda's elevation of 1,500 feet (400 m). From these beginnings developed a thriving community that enjoyed its remote location but which also fostered close relationships with its neighbors. Today, residents of Wauconda continue to build log cabins and contribute to their community through volunteerism and business ventures. The town of Wauconda, Illinois was founded in 1847 by the merger of two small settlements, Wauconda and Parkville. The original name for the new town was "Beaver Dam". The first post office was established in 1848 and the first store opened in 1850. By 1860, the population of Wauconda had increased to 150 people. In 1871, a group of farmers organized a township organization. On December 1st, 1871, Wauconda became a Township with a population of 350 residents. In 1916, the Village of Wauconda merged into the Town of Wauconda. On January 1st, 1927, the Township formed a Joint Powers Authority with Parkville to provide services such as garbage pickup and road construction. The authority continued until May 30th when it dissolved due to lack of funding. The Town of Wauconda is currently governed by an elected Mayor and Council who serve four-year terms with no possibility for reelection after six years since joining forces with Parkville reaffirming their commitment to working together for all members of their community including those living within Cook County and beyond
Wauconda was founded in 1871 by the brothers George and John Wauconda. The town grew rapidly after it was established and soon had a population of over 100 people. The town also started to build a variety of businesses, including a mill, store, Post Office, and school. In 1916, Wauconda became the first Illinois community to receive city status.
