Wauconda is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was laid out in 1851 by John Prentice and his wife Eliza Prentice and named for Wauconda Creek on the border of their land between Peoria and Mount Prospect. The first settler, David Noyes, built a cabin on the creek in 1852. A post office called Wauconda opened in 1854. In 1861, Wauconda Township was organized; it included present-day Wauconda. The first school was erected in 1865; it operated until 1969 when it became part of Westmont Community School District #2. In 1886, George Davenport donated 5 acres (20 hectares) to be used as a public park; this area now includes Grant Park and parts of Woodlawn and North Zion communities near downtown Chicago. The townsite changed hands three more times before coming into common ownership with villagehood status in 1951 through an agreement among five villages: Cicero-North Lawndale (now Englewood), Garfield Heights-South Side (now Glenview), Humboldt Park- Northwest Side (now Orland Park), Oak Lawn-River Forest (now GlenviewWoods), and Streamwood-East Side (now Homer Glen). In 1957, the name change to Wauconda after trustee Walt Breslin's suggestion that it be given to him because he had been living there since 1955 while working for General Electric as an engineer stationed at its Rahway plant east of town].
