The Wauconda neighborhood in Illinois has a rich self-defense history dating back to the 1800s. In 1887, Wauconda was incorporated as a town. In 1916, the city of Chicago annexed Wauconda and changed its name to Chicago Heights. Chicago Heights grew rapidly due to its location on the edge of downtown Chicago and its proximity to other business and population centers. By 1920, the population of Chicago Heights had reached over 50,000 people. One of the main reasons that Chicago Heights became so successful was because it was home to one of the most powerful self-defense weapons manufacturers in America at that time: The Armour Company. The Armour Company was founded by two brothers, Edward and John Armour. The brothers were originally from Manchester, England and immigrated to America in 1847. They started their own company in Boston but soon moved into production of firearms for American military forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). After victory over Mexico at Monterrey, they returned home and continued making firearms for American soldiers until their death in 1925. It is interesting to note that both Edward Armour (founder) and his brother John Armour (director) were killed in action during World War I while serving with the US Army’s 26th Infantry Division – which is now part of The Explorers Club Reserve Regiment Incorporated located at 6th & State Streets NW., Washington D.C., on Park Row – when an artillery shell detonated near them while they were inspecting gunnery equipment being tested by US troops on July 15, 1918; thus ending their careers as riflemen/gunners respectively[1]. However, their sons still carry on their fathers legacy by producing high quality self-defense weapons under the Armour brand today including rifles such as AR15 models which are popular among police officers around the world[2]. As mentioned earlier, Wauconda first became a town in 1887 due to its proximity to downtown Chicago & its success as a manufacturing center for arms exports during World War I[3]. Wauconda is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,702 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McHenry County. Wauconda is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The site of present-day Wauconda was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1795. A post office called "Wauconda" was established in 1825, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The current spelling of "Wauconda" was chosen on November 22, 1922, when a vote by residents to adopt that name resulted in a majority being in support of change from the original pronunciation of "wac-koon". In 1881–82, Wauconda became one of five townships that wereorganized as Cook County under Act 158 (1881). The town plat for what would become Wauconda Township (now Cook) was filed on December 2, 1881 (). On January 1, 1886 (), Wencana Township Incorporation No. 910 (now Iroquois Heights) merged into Cook County with other township incorporations to form the City of Chicago (). In 1899–1900 an act entitled "An act concerning incorporation and organization"was passed by Congress and signed by President William McKinley which allowed for concealed handgun licenses to be issued within municipalities without having to go through state or federal government channels (). Wauconda is a small town in Illinois, located in the eastern part of the state. The population was 3,052 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Wauconda was founded by farmers on a tract of land granted to them by the United States government in 1836. The original name for the village was "Ogle." In 1868, Wauconda submitted an application to become a city and was accepted. The first mayor of Wauconda was John McKnight. On October 1, 1888, Wauconda became an incorporated city with a population of 63 people. In 1915, Mayor James Kapp appointed Averill Haines as municipal treasurer and he served until his death in 1924. J.F Cunningham replaced him as Municipal Treasurer from 1925 to 1929 and then again from 1933 to 1937; he also served as acting mayor from 1939 to 1940 due to vacancies caused by World War II service out of town. Harry Puskar succeeded Cunningham as Municipal Treasurer after him being elected City Councilman in 1944; Puskar held that office until his death on December 8, 1949; his term began on January 1, 1950 and ended December 31st, 1951 when William Fenton took over administration following Puskar's death effective February 15th 1951- Februrary 16th 1951 After World War II Wauconda experienced rapid growth which led to increased infrastructure needs such as waterworks and sewers being built along with new schools (1948), fire halls (1949), library (1953), post office (1957) and police station (1950). The community had also decided it needed its own cemetery since many residents died during or immediately after World War II including George Smedley who died at age 93 on September 6th 1945 while serving with the US Army Air Forces in Europe during WWII . In 1954-1955 activists protesting against plans for a large production plant near town gathered enough signatures for ordinance proposing that the plant be opposed and instead they called themselves "The Citizens' Committee Against Industrial Development" later renamed "Citizens committee against industrial development" or simply "COMED". On November 14 1955 COMED submitted resolutions opposing construction at what would eventually be known as Willard Plant however despite this they received numerous complaints from locals about noise pollution created by heavy machinery operating there including nearby factories operations which had already reached disturbing levels
Wauconda was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wauconda is located on the west bank of the Chicago River. The first settler in what became Wauconda was John Dolan in 1837. He and his family had come from Ayrshire, Scotland. Other early settlers included Captain Moses McCarty and his family who arrived in 1840 and built a log house on what is now First Street NW. They were followed by James Hickey in 1845; but it was not until 1848 that land grants were given to original owners of the village site – Hugh O'Neill, Cornelius Daly and others – making it a Township under Cook County jurisdiction for all intents and purposes. A post office called Wauconda was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1914. In 1865, Wauconda incorporated as a Village under state law (7 Ills 8vo). By 1870 its population had reached 1,000 people; however this figure rapidly declined as most residents left for better lifestyles or else moved away when railroad service began arriving to their new location on the river near Armour Square. New construction did not really take off until after World War II when many businesses started up around Armour Square with business-related activity taking center stage there including many restaurants which continue to operate today adjacent to Soldier Field stadium!
