This tract became known as Sargent Park after Rev Sargent's donation to Bloomington Township trustees in 1833. On February 23, 1834 James Kipp began teaching school in an open classroom on School Street between Broadway and Prospect Avenue using materials brought over from Kentucky by wagon train; this first public school was attended by about 10 students grades 3 through 8th grade (). The following year Kipp donated land on which Community college now stands for use as a campus for his new institution; this land also includes portions of present day downtown Bloomington today (Kipp Campus)).
