Chesterton was a town in Vigo County, Indiana, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chesterton was John Wilkinson and his family who arrived in 1825. They started a small farm on what is now known as Wilkinson Road. In 1827, they sold their land to Jno Aitken and his family who established the Aitken mansion on present-day Main Street. In 1829, Augustus Kelley purchased land from Jno Aitken for $1,000 and began building what would become the first courthouse in Chesterton. The courthouse served as the community's government center until it burned down in 1904. The first school in Chesterton was built about 1830 by Methodist missionaries under the name of "Fenwick School." It burned down in 1840 but was rebuilt and renamed "Moses Brown School" after Moses Brown of Terre Haute, Indiana who donated money for its construction. In 1865, the school moved to its current location on First Avenue South when that street was designated as a public road near the new town square which had been completed two years earlier by merchant George Fenton with help from local farmers and businessmen like James Mclntyre and Wm Hines Sr.. In 1876, businessman Josiah Macy founded an flour mill in nearby Terre Haute which made cloth products such as mantelery curtains and bed sheets using chestnut flour instead of white flour used throughout most of America at that time. This mill provided employment for many people right up until it closed around 1920 due to competition from other mills owned by larger companies like Singer Sewing Machine Company or International Harvester Company etc.. He also founded Masonic Hall (now historical museum) which served as a meeting place for various organizations such as Odd Fellows Lodge No 2 (forerunner to today's American Legion), Shriners' Shrine No 2 ( predecessor to today's Salvation Army), Knights Templar No 3 ( forerunner to today's Modern Woodmen of America) among others during this time period
Chesterton, Indiana was incorporated in 1847. The first post office in the community was opened in 1851. The city name was changed to Chesterton in 1875. In 1907, the city became a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
