Clarksville is home to the Clarksville Nuclear Power Plant and the American Legion post-office. The first settler in Clarksville was James Clapp who arrived in 1814. The town was settlement by Methodists from Kentucky. It became a village on December 11, 1818 when Daniel Boone moved his family from Louisville to Clarksville. In 1825, John Fenton set up a trading post here and named it for himself – Fentonburgh. For many years, this post served as the center of trade for the area; lumber brought in by traders from Illinois came ashore here along with goods bought from farmers and merchants in other parts of Jefferson County. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, commerce shifted eastward and Fentonburgh gradually discontinued its role as an important center of trade after which it slowly declined until its abandonment on January 1, 1865 due to lack of patronage following the death of John Fenton Sr.). On November 3rd, 1861, during Indian War (1809-1863), Confederate forces burned down one or more barns near what is now town square after capturing an unoccupied cabin near present day Elm Street and Bascom Road (). This event is widely considered to be the start of Clarksville's growth as a community within Unionist lines (). This early period saw various businesses spring up around main street including J & L Wholesale Grocery which was founded by Jesse Loyd (a well-known local grocery storeman) before becoming part of Kroger Incorporated in 1922. One such business that thrived until it went out of business was Hensley Bros’ Clothing Store which had been opened by Hiram Hensley Sr., father of Hiram Hensley Jr., back in 1840 (). After serving many years as an important center for retail trade throughout much of our history (), Hensley Bros’ closed its doors for good on February 19th, 2001 following years filled with struggles led by then owner/manager Roy Heiser ().
