Coal mining has been an important industry in Clarksville since before World War II; today, it employs about 60% of the town's workforce. Other industries have followed: primary manufacturing (paintball rifles, bicycles and clothing), service sectors (banks and restaurants) and professional services (lawyers, doctors). However, heavy industry has declined in recent years; instead there are now several small businesses catering to a more low-key lifestyle than formerly existed within this traditionally working-class community. Today's residents are descendants of early pioneers who moved into this area during the 1800s after being driven out of Kentucky by Indians and others seeking to establish new possessions on what had once been their land. Many people from outside the town still visit each year because they find its history interesting or because they enjoy hiking or fishing in nearby waterways which account for almost one third of all water used by locals!

Clarksville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. It was founded by early pioneer Daniel Boone in 1788, and has been its location for many years. The community is located on the confluence of the White River and Little Miami River, about 31 miles (50 km) north-northwest of Indianapolis. At its peak, Clarksville had a population of 2,500 people in 1907. Today, it has a population of just over 200 people. Clarksville was founded by Daniel Boone in 1788 as a cabin on the White River near where he would later settle his family and begin to explore this region. The first permanent settler arrived in 1790 – Joseph Cloyd – when he built a log cabin at what is now called Cloverdale Ferry Road/Upper Clarksville Road. By 1800, Cloyd had erected several other cabins along these waterways and began to trade with the local Indian tribes for goods and services such as tolls on bridges crossing the rivers. In 1802, Matthias Gentry established himself at Whatley's Ford downstream from Cloverdale Ferry Road/Upper Clarksville Road; soon thereafter Gentry began trading with the Shawnee tribe for goods and services including tax collection on their land east of Evans Creek bedeviled by an annual cycle of raiding that plagued much of central Indiana beginning in 1795 known as "The Greatraid". In 1805 Gentry became proprietor of all or part of what are now Cloverdale Ferry Rd./Upper Clarksville Road, Whatley's Ford Bridge & vicinity upstream from it (including present day Deer Lake), which he named after his father-in-law Simon Carter who owned extensive lands eastward extending into Ohio County across Greencastle Creek/White River Valley between present day Lafayette & Brookside Roads). In 1806 Gentry sold all or part*of this area to James Hinkle Sr., also proprietor*of what are now Cloverdale Ferry Rd./Upper Clarksville Road adjacent to Clarion Township limits*. From this point forward Cloyd & Hinkle were sole proprietors*of what are today Cloverdale Ferry Rd./Upper Clarksville Road*, Whatley's Ford Bridge*, upper Deer Lake*, *present day Lafayette Church Cemetery*& *most notably* *Clarion Township limits*. A post office was opened at nearby Upper Clarkesville in 1831; it closed circa 1840 due to lack of customers despite efforts by incumbent James Hinkle Jr.*to expand operations into adjoining townships*. A store was established at Lower Clarkesville about 1830; it closed circa 1840 due to lack of customers despite efforts by incumbent James Hinkle Jr.*to expand operations into adjoining townships*. A school was opened within what are currently Lower Clarkesville School District boundaries about 1830; it closed circa 1840 due to lack of customers despite efforts by incumbent James Hinkle Jr.*to expand operations into adjoining townships *. By 1865, most residents living within Claxton Township had either moved away or converted to Methodism following religious conversions sponsored by Reverend John Smeaton† during that year’s Moravian revival crusade†(*later Bishop Smeaton) targeting frontier Protestant Baptists then residing throughout much northeastern Indiana†(*see: “Methodist missionaries work among Indians” clipping from Our History website). However some clarkites stayed behind while others relocated†(*one example being Elijah Bivens who migrated from Louisville Ky., via Cincinnati Oh., arriving here c1855*) primarily because they could not find employment opportunities elsewhere inside Claxton Township limits** (*see: Historical Atlas #4 “Indiana history - Residents outside Claxton Township”). Consequently many clarkites formed companies under various legal names beginning with DANIEL BOONE COMPANY LLC until finally disbanding around 1870″(*emphases added). In addition thereto one or more other unincorporated communities may have been existing contemporaneously*: CLARKVILLE CREEK CEMETERY (adjacent Craigieburn property); MUNICIPAL WATER FOUNTAIN (adjacent Muncie properties north side creek bank); CROFTON VALLEY FARMERS MARKET (adjacent present day Fort Wayne Co.-on road leading thence southwestwardly through Clearwater LickOpen space towards large pond lying southeast corner thereof situated near source spring Of Crofton Creek lies farmstead occupied since 1850 directly opposite public square mentioned above'); PINE GROVE(about 10 acres [4 ha] northeast corner Of Elm Street lot included herein presently enclosed within fencenew survey map plat filed Dec 1974)* [*note: Some sources state that Pine Grove existed prior to purchase date commonly given as 1830]; PINE ROAD(no longer extant but lay south side EAST OF HIGHWAY 50 BETWEEN SOUTH STREET AND JONES RD.;Accessible from main road through open field next door owns house which standing still oldest structure standing in village today surrounded only by high grasses & trees remaining visible inside grounds]. These additional Communities were generally organized according as follows: CLARKVILLE INDIAN TRIBE COOPERATIVE GROUP INC.; MAYFIELD INDIAN TRIBE COOPERATIVE GROUP INC.; WHITE RIVER NATION COOPERATIVE GROUP INC.* (*notes changed 3/14/2018 *) . Although each community enjoyed autonomy under their own management organization*, any business transactions conducted between these organizations were always supervised via overarchingClaxtonTownshipBoardOfDirectors responsible for coordinating activities among all constituent Community groups
