Clarksville was founded in 1827 as a post office named Clarksburg. In 1859, it became the county seat of Kosciusko County and remained so until 1911 when Evansville replaced it. It lost its county seat status in 1925 but regained it in 1971. The present day name of Clarksville comes from William H. Clifton's purchase of 3,000 acres (1 km²) of land near the town center in 1854 for $5 per acre ($100 total). The Clifton family built many homes and schools around Clarksville before selling most of their holdings to other residents during the late 1800s and early 1900s. One resident, Calvin Witherspoon, donated 1/4 mile (0.8 km²) of woods north of town to be used as a public park with baseball diamonds, tennis courts, playgrounds and other features for all citizens to enjoy; this donation remains today as Parkside Park. In 1916 Clarksville became home to one of America's first airfields – Whiteman Field – which served as base camp for Douglas Aircraft Company during World War I until it was closed down due to wartime restrictions on aviation fuel production quotas by American companies like Boeing and Lockheed Martin Corporation. The field continues to be used recreationally today by members of the local search and Rescue organization Paramedics Midwest Region (PAMR), which uses it for training purposes mainly involving response exercises with special operations teams such as Navy SEALs or Army Special Forces units engaged in counter-terrorism or hostage rescue missions abroad). While not an officially incorporated community within Kosciusko County until 1956 when "Clarksburgh Township"was granted tax status by then-County Clerk Lyle Dickey after years protesting by some residents about what they saw as being inadequate services offered by county officials at that time including no water supply or lack thereof on certain streets -the growth associated with heavy industry along I-465 -and population trends resulting from relocating workers seeking cheaper wages & benefits moving into nearby EvansVILLE led to annexation petitions being filed & votes cast by both Township & School Boardmembers (& Councilmember Dave Kapp) Petitioners successfully obtained annexation rating & approval from Kosciusko County Assessor’s Office prior to final platting taking place August 6th 1959 thru October 15th 1959 Thru December 2nd 1959 under new name “Clarksburgh Township”

It became a part of Hendricks County when it was created in 1836. The first post office in Clarksville was established in 1827. The town had a population of just over 100 people when it won its first public school district election in 1840. In 1850, Clarksville became the county seat for Hendricks County and still has that distinction to this day. Over time, Clarksville has seen drastic changes as its economy changed from agriculture to manufacturing and now back again to agriculture. The early history of Clarksville is intertwined with that of its namesake Colonel John Clifton. Clifton came to America from England in 1799 and soon after set out for what he thought would be an adventure: he arrived at the port of New Orleans with only $8 US dollars and two bags of clothes but quickly discovered that life was not going to be as simple as he thought it would be. He started out working on a plantation near Baton Rouge, Louisiana until 1800 when he decided to move north into Canada where he met some friends who introduced him to the land business: farming instead of slave labor! From here on out, Clifton built up his empire and began importing goods from Europe (mainly raw materials needed for manufacturing) which helped spur American economic growth during the 19th century. Clarksville played an important role during these times too: it served as a transportation hub linking different parts of the country; it hosted various events such as state fairs; and most importantly, it provided opportunities for those who did not have much else going for them within society to make something better for themselves through their hard work and determination! Today, Clarksville continues its proud history by being one of the most vibrant communities in Hendricks County – home to many businesses and families who are committed to keeping everything local while making sure their relationships stay strong!
