Clarksville is a small town in the northeastern corner of Indiana, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Butler University and the headquarters for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Clarksville is also known for its annual Christmas Festival, which takes place in December. The community was founded by John Clarkson in 1827 as a small log cabin on a bend in the river near present-day Clarksville. By 1830, Clarksville had become an agricultural village with two stores and about 50 residents. In 1834, John Clarkson's son James A. Clarkson built a sawmill and gristmill on what is now US 231 north of town; these mills became one of the leading employers in Clarksville until they closed around 1970. In 1881, George Armstrong Clark (1830-1911), one of America's most noted generals during World War I and later president of New York City, purchased land east of town from James A. Clarkson for $10 per acre ($ million current value). He began to build what would become Butler University on this land; construction began in 1886 and was completed within six years. The university remains one of America's largest private universities today. Clarksville has been largely unchanged since its founding; except for some addition of businesses and homes over time, it retains many buildings from its early days including the original Clarkson Saw Mill which still stands along US 231 just south of town (now used as part of Butler University). Today Clarksville anchors much of eastern Indiana's "rust belt" region with its busy cotton plantations supplemented by small retail districts lining main streets throughout downtown - making it an oasis far removed from either major city traffic or bustle that can be found elsewhere in similar sized towns across central Indiana!
