During World War II, much employment took place within local defense plants operated by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works adjacent to downtown Gary; however production stopped abruptly at those plants following September 11th 2001 due to government regulations related to airport security measures (see also: "Lenk-Gas Production halted after 9/11"). DowntownGary experienced a period of growth starting around 1990 until 2003 known as "The New Millenium." At that time new housing developments began popping up all over downtownGary although they remain generally unincorporated territory subject to city code regulation; most notably Park Place Village which opened in 2006 just south of Union Station on Main Street between Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue NW across from Interstate 65 (see also: "City limits expand westward with annexation of Park Place Village"); this redevelopment has effectively redeveloped much older abandoned land near FirstEnergy Stadium into new neighborhoods containing modern highrise apartment buildings along with open space such as squares and parks located nearby which continue Toombs Creek's historic path through downtownGary connecting it both physically and historically with other areas surrounding it such as Northwest Side streets running parallel to FirstEnergy Stadium property line) Since then there has been significant redevelopment going on primarily around FirstEnergy Stadium with further incorporation onto surrounding properties including Park Place Village
