The original name for the city was "Granite City", but it changed to "Gary" because of objections from some residents who felt that the name sounded like a mineral name instead of an agricultural town. Gary experienced significant growth beginning in the late 19th century when railroads began moving passengers and freight through its central location at the headwaters of the White River. Railroads brought industry into town and also created new demand for housing, which led to construction of brick buildings throughout downtown Gary in addition to numerous small businesses that sprung up around them. The early days of radio broadcasting were also important factors leading to growth as local stations aired programming from all over America including programs produced by NBC Radio 720 AM which first aired in 1923 from studios located on Fourth Street between Michigan Avenue and Harrison Street. In 1930, Mayor John D'Arcy completed construction on a large new downtown building that served as both municipal courthouse and civic center until 1952 when it was replaced by present day Park Square Civic Center which houses many services such as libraries, parks, restaurants etc.. In 1984/1985 Gary lost its status as county seat when Posey County became one unified entity with more than one million residents
