It is an industrial and commercial center with a large concentration of heavy machinery used in manufacturing. Gary's nickname "The Steel City" comes from its history as an important center for steel production. In 1881, the Chicago, Milwaukee & Stroudsburg Railroad built a line from Chicago to Gary. This made it possible to shipment goods from Illinois to Michigan without having to go through Ohio or points west. The city became known as the "Gateway to the Midwest". In 1886, Abraham Lincoln visited here while on his way to campaign for President; he stopped at the local steam locomotive factory before returning home. Gary was incorporated as a town on December 15, 1892. It quickly emerged as one of Indiana's leading industrial towns due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads and its access to resources such as coal and water power plants. By 1920, Gary had become one of America's largest cities by population – surpassing New York City – and had developed into a major transportation hub with passenger trains service available both into Chicago and out-of-state destinations such as Detroit and Cleveland.

The name "Gary" comes from French for "the fort." The first permanent settler in what would become Gary was James Caldwell in 1815. A post office called Caldwell was established in 1817, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. At the time of its establishment, Gary had a population of just ten people. The first store on Main Street was opened by Wm Hargrave and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Brownell on October 5, 1819. In 1821, John Stephenson began operating a gristmill on White River Road west of downtown Gary; this mill continued to be run until 1903 when it became part of theIndiana Locomotive & Machine Company Limited. In 1830, Isaac Noyes platted what would become Gary with land he had purchased from the Canandaigua Land Bank; under Noyes' plat there were three squares measuring one acre each side and bounded by First Avenue (now Ellington Avenue), Second Avenue (now State Route 36), and Third Avenue (now College Boulevard). This square parcel became known as Constitution Square because it represented the limits set forth by Henry Knox's 1787 Declaration of Independence. In 1836, John Fenton organized a township which included much of today'sGary; however, Fenton's township never received municipal approval due to disagreements over boundaries between neighboring townships – including that of present-day Montevideo Township - which formed the core portion of today's city OFcgary/DowntownGary
