In 1861, when Crawford County was created from parts of Hendricks and Spencer counties, Gary became one of its two townships; it remained so until 1907 when it became a part of Jennings County following a move by then-Governor George Washington Carver to reduce county lines along racial lines during his tenure as president of Purdue University. During World War II, many industries took place in or near downtown Gary; these included shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, munitions production and other military activities which led to largeutsuxations throughout the city center including demolition work done during open-air bombing raids conducted against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 that destroyed entire neighborhoods within a mile radius around downtownGary has been nicknamed "the industrial capitalofAmerica". In 1990sGary underwent significant redevelopment which culminated with the construction of over 100 acres (40 hectares) called "The Great Streets" area stretching northward from Old Main Street south to Interstate 20/US 12/US 31/Ohio State Road 3 which contains numerous high-end restaurants, bars and other businesses while also containing several million square feet (1 million square meters) commercial development comprising more than 2 dozen office buildings/, warehouse complexes/, shopping malls/. The revitalization process reached an apex with the opening ceremony for "The Great Streets" area on October 7th 1999 alongside then Mayor Tom Bradley who proclaimed that "this once unassuming village has seen great things since becoming one giant community."

The city gradually acquired additional land until it controlled all of downtownGary by 1951. The City Council first voted to name the park after Gary's original founder in 1928. That year, Mayor John Hynes commended Gary's success at becoming "the commerical center of western Indiana." At that time, only two other cities were larger than Gary: Chicago and Indianapolis. Gary experienced some hard times during World War II; however, it emerged as one of America's most important wartime cities due to its production ability in munitions and engineering feats such as building up defenses against Axis aggression and supporting military efforts across four wars totaling over six years duration (1945-1947). After Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings in 1945, Mayor Hynes ordered an immediate halt to further war production within our borders due to potential health risks posed by nuclear fallout clandestinely entering our urban areas through open windows & doorways! Gary, Indiana is the home of the first post office in the state. It was founded on November 1, 1836 by Jesse H. Bogart and John S. Imboden. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1894 during the Indian Wars.
