In 1840, a railroad was constructed through Marion and soon after, the town began to boom with businesses sprang up around the mills and mines. By 1850, the population of Marion had increased to 1,500 people. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during World War II because many refugees wanted to avoid being drafted into military service.
