Washington was founded in 1785 by George Washington and his friends as a trading post on the Ohio River. The town grew quickly, and in 1815 it became the capital of the United States. With its growing businesses and population, Washington experienced rapid growth during this time period. By 1850 it had outgrown its original boundaries; so much so that it was renamed "Washington National City." In 1862 Indianapolis became an independent city under Territorial rule; however, due to its close proximity to Louisville (then Kentucky) and pressure from Virginia officials over Indian reservations east of Interstate 65 within Indiana Territory - including part of today's Indianapolis - Indy never fully regained its status as a national capital during Reconstruction years following the American Civil War (1861-1865). During both periods there were constant efforts by local leaders in Indianapolis to attract attention from government officials living elsewhere in America or abroad who desired greater investments or infrastructure projects within their jurisdictions – something that came only too late for Alexandria-Monroe County which lay just across I-465 from Washington National City at that time (!). The lack of permanent infrastructure around either Georgetown or Lafayette – two smaller nearby towns – doomed those communities’ attempts at becoming truly self-reliant urban centers during these years without corresponding investment from outside entities such as private investors intent on displacing large numbers of working class Hoosiers on plantations throughout central Indiana (the overall trend across southeasternIndiana during this time period paralleled slavery’s gradual but inexorable absorption into northern states through area incorporations/division/mergers)). Finally “National City” lost significance altogether following 1966 when all federal buildings were relocated away from downtownIndianapolis due largely to concerns about air quality caused by high levels of coal emissions emanating from numerous military facilities located nearby including Lucas Oil Stadium then known as Normandale Municipal Airport.)
