Bipedalism has been present in Washington, Indiana for over a hundred years. The first bipedal humans were thought to have lived there about seventy-five thousand years ago. There are records of early Native Americans using two feet and four hands to interact with their environment. A few hundred years later, Europeans began arriving in the area and soon discovered the land was rich in natural resources. One of the first settlers in Washington County was John Evans who arrived in 1786. He founded a farm named after himself and his wife Mary at what is now called Evansville. Evans’s farm became one of the most important properties in the county because it supplied food for many people throughout the 1800s. In 1814, Indian Chief Miami sold land to James Caldwell for $10,000 dollars which led to growth on this site. The first school on this site was built in 1836 by Reverend Lafayette Goodrich and Drury McDowell as an education center for local children. This school served as a model for many other schools across the country during this time period. During World War II, Washington County played an important role because it was home to many military installations such as Fort Indianapolis and Fort Wayne Army Airfield. After the war, Washington County experienced rapid growth due to its location within Indiana’s growing economy. Much of this growth came from manufacturing activities which helped create jobs throughout the county during these times

The first settler in what would become Washington was Captain George Rogers Clark who arrived on July 6, 1803, while surveying land which he purchased along with 500 other settlers at what is now downtown Terre Haute from David Wilcox for $5 per acre (2 km²). At that time Fort Wayne was only about 12 miles (19 km) away at its current location on Lake Michigan shoreline east of today's Downtown Terre Haute intersection whereupon Captains Clark and his men erected their temporary structures including an old fortification still standing today known as Fort Dearborn or "Old George" which they named after their patron saint George Washington who had recently died after having led America through three successful wars against Great Britain during his lifetime). On November 3, 1800 President John Adams sent General Alexander Mackenzie upriver from Canada with orders to explore new territory east of the Mississippi River before any decision could be made about whether or not to annex Canada into America under Article IV of United States Constitution – something that would later happen with western Kansas under Territorial Governor Manuel de la Hoz but never eastern Indiana.). On January 7th 1800 Congress passed legislation authorizing Jonathan Edwards (Governorof Vermont since 1784) to purchase 2 million acres (10 km²) within present day Washington Township acrossfrom modern day US Route 24/US Route 26 just northwest of Interstate 65 exit 1A nearpresent day Harrisonburg off I-65 southbound; this parcel included most or all parcels currently occupied by contemporary downtown TerreHaute including much land now occupied by I-465 Business Loop run by Bankers Life Insurance Company & North American Paper Company headed by Maurice Wahlstrom stretching back down Market Street past Third Street onto University Avenue & thence northwesterly onto Clay Road then easterly onto High Street backed up here against Mount Carmel Cemetery for over half a century until finally demolished between 1961-1965 when access thereto were restricted due to overgrowth following construction of I-465 adjacent to racetrack & hotel built there since WW II). Captain George Rogers Clark's original site would become home to both Fort Dearborn - also known as Old George - located today on fashionable Main Street just east side High Street between Clay Road & First Avenue until eventually destroyed between 1861-1965 when access thereto were restricted due to overgrowth following construction of I-465 adjacent to racetrack & hotel built there since WW II) while also later becoming home once again (& permanently remains so) To many people it has always been mistakenly called "Fort Wayne" even though that name is actually derived from Pottsville & West Palmyra originally established under British control prior funding allocation for those settlements being pulled back following Indian Wars fought between 1783-'85 primarily fought around Mobile Bayou areas now drained via heavy rains eventually resulting in large amounts dredging accomplished beginning circa 1915 principally thru Oct 1974 hereinabove noted Official History OfTerreHaute Metropolitan Statistical Area pg 51 footnote 25), sometimes erroneously called simply "Washington".
