In 1912 Dodge City annexed part of Olathe Township to form its present boundaries. The oilfields around Wichita were discovered in 1901 and production began soon after; by 1909 Dodge City had become one of the leading centers for oil production in Kansas. By 1925 oil production had reached such levels that it forced out most other businesses in the city; by 1930 all but four remaining businesses were gone and only seven people lived in what is now downtown Dodge City
