In 1859, Dodge City became the capital of the Kansas Territory. The city experienced a period of prosperity during the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, during World War I, Dodge City was devastated by riots that occurred between 1914 and 1918.

The armory was located on the east side of town and manufactured artillery, rifles, machine guns, armor-piercing shells, rockets, grenades and other munitions. During World War I the Arsenal produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition. In World War II the Arsenal produced almost 2 million rounds of ammunition.
Dodge City is a town in southeast Kansas, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dodge County. The name "Dodge" comes from Dodge Creek and the surrounding land around it. The creek was named for General George H. Dodge, who fought in the Mexican–American War and served as PostmasterGeneral of Mexico City. The first known permanent settlers in this area were three families from Illinois: Prentice and his wife Sarah (née White) moved to what is now Dodge City on July 3, 1855; John Fetterman and his family arrived two days later on July 5th. They founded a log cabin called "Fountain View." In November 1856, Isaac Chappell moved to what is now Wichita Falls, Texas with his family and started peach orcharding near present day Wichita Falls. He imported Georgian apple trees that he had grown in England. When American Civil War began on April 12th 1861, Chappell joined Union forces and relocated his orchard to Dodge City where he operated a gunsmith shop until May 1863 when he joined Union forces as an artillery officer at Fort Riley against Confederate Forces under Robert E Grant.. After the war ended on October 6th 1865 him returned home to start over again but died suddenly less than one year later on January 2nd 1866 aged 47 years old making him one of only four people ever buried in downtown Dodge City.. His wife Jane also died relatively young without children so their funeral was held at First Presbyterian Church followed by burial at Fort Riley National Cemetery.. Their son Samuel Ira Chappell took over their management business after their death.. In 1898 local entrepreneur Harry Voorhees bought majority interest in Wichita Falls Oil & Gas Company which became Voorhees-Houston Corporation.. By 1920 the company employed 4500 workers producing Refineries crude oil products services production of wheat germ oil lube etc., making it one of largest oil companies west of Oklahomalahoma before deregulation during 1990s led to its downfall.. In 1999 Voorhees-Houston Corporation merged with Alliant Energy Corp forming Alliant Energy TX Incorporated which became part of ExxonMobil through spinoff ExxonMobil Rex Tillerson & Co LLC In December 2009 ExxonMobil announced they would be selling all assets within Rex Tillerson & Co LLC including the town of Dodge City to private investors pending regulatory approval In March 2011 following disappointing results from their investment they sold all assets back into Rex Tillerson &co LLC Dodge City has been inhabited by Native Americans since time immemorial. Paleo-Indians hunted gamehere and collected animal horn cores which they wore as jewelry ornaments. The first European settler arriving in this area was Captain James Cook who landed here with Discovery Expedition on September 29, 1779 aboard HMS Endeavour along with Lieutenant John Heard searching for new routes across America's West Coast On August 21st 1861 wagon train load consisting mostly female slaves belonging to Mrs James Dunbar arrived at Independence Rock opposite present day Wichita Falls having traveled downriver from Missouri via Arkansas River route then travelled east along Canadian River route reaching this location after spending 10 days travelling 273 miles (429 km). For unknown reasons these slaves did not disembark here but continued downriver towards present day Topeka where they were eventually taken by force into slavery near Independence Rock by General David Lane's militia detachment led by Colonel Elijah Boudinot against orders from President James Krieger
