In 1978, following years of decline due to Rust Belt joblessness and automation, Dodge City lost its status as an economic center when those industries moved away to larger metropolitan areas such as Detroit or Chicago. However, it has since rebounded thanks to startup businesses such as online retailer Overstock and real estate developer Dick’s Sporting Goods which have brought jobs back into downtown streetscapes once filled with abandoned warehouses and factories dating back to World War II.
