After 9/11/2001 Mayor Rick Wirth began efforts aimed at curtailing illegal immigration through enforcement methods such as checkpoints along U-S Interstate highways With over 1 million dollars from federal agencies ,the Wichita Police Department purchased sixteen “smart force” patrol cars equipped with radar technology capable Of detecting undocumented immigrants approaching our borders without warning our citizens .The Smartforce Patrol Cars are currently used To Checkpoints Along I-25 And I-70 In The Area Around Dodge City And Topeka Gun confiscation became another popular method employed by law enforcement against people convictedof misdemeanor marijuana possession back in 1993 It started off small but quickly escalated into what we know today As Sheriff Tom Weldon stated "When you got somebody arrested on marijuana charges--we took their weapon".
