The town of Dodgeville was founded about two miles (3 km) west of present-day Dodge City on November 11, 1827 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law Lewis Cass as a result of land speculation following John C. Fremont's exploration of the area in 1824. In 1829, Ulysses S. Grant became Governor of Kansas and ordered all towns within 2 miles (3 km) of Lawrence to be incorporated into new counties or become abandoned settlements with their property divided among their inhabitants so that it could be used for grazing or farming purposes without seizure or sale by government officials. The largest remaining buffalo ranch in Kansas was located near what is now Wichita and Grant ordered the roundup of those animals and shipment back to Nebraska to be used for beef rather than being sold off like livestock. This event helped start the cattle industry in Kansas and has been cited as one reason why Wichita became a center for cattle trading during the 19th century despite its small size compared to other Midwestern cities such as Chicago and St Louis. Grant's 1854 speech in which he praised the then-new Territory of Kansas for its "dignity and self-reliance."
