One of the traders, James McGillivray, called out to them and asked if they wanted some apple wood for his fire; one of the Indians replied "yes," so McGillivray caused his horse to be taken away while leading his pony up to find some more wood and brought back two logs worth $3 each! As a result of this anecdote Ottawa became known as "Apple orchard."

Today's economy is based on service industries such as health care and logistics; however, until very recently there were also significant sectors such as agriculture that continue to play an important role in local life. Commerce played an even more significant role than today in early Canadian society; products exported from Canada traffic across Great Lakes ports all along Interstate 80 bringing jobs directly to Ontario (now Chicago). This traditional trade pattern continued into America during both World Wars – goods flowed freely between our countries until Japan began bombing American citizens while we were fighting Nazis overseas! However, once World War II ended things changed dramatically for all concerned – trade restrictions were put into place that limited cross-border movement for years afterwards! This stagnation led to economic decline for both Canada and Ontario during this time period; however, recent initiatives including bold new investment within our battered but still recoverable centre have given us some hope for resurgence!
