The first courthouse in Bowling Green was built in 1788 by Captain John Smith and it burned down two years later. A new courthouse was built between 1824 and 1830 by James Hardin and it also burned down twice but was replaced both times with better-quality wood without losing any value. The Third District Court House which served as the City Hall from 1825 until 1907 burned down on July 4, 1912 while being used for storage purposes by Mayor Jens Christensen after he had bought it from David Loyd for $10 per acre (1/4 acre). At that time it was America's second largest building after New York's Trinity Cathedral. The current building—a three story brick structure—was erected at a cost of $35 million (2004 dollars) within Judge Royce Hale's original planning which included extensive renovation work that began when he took office in 2001. The first game ever played in what would become Bowling Green occurred on October 10th, 1853 when 11 year old George Washington Dixon played against 7 year old Amos Eaton from nearby Richmondtown under rules set up by General Robert Ewell during his Creek Expedition into eastern Kentucky known as "the campaign". After playing three innings each player exhausted their stock at Local 8 ball bowled over 100 yards off a long green inside an open field bounded only by high fences around Anson Hill Cemetery east of town limits then walked back home following victory or Defeat depending upon your perspective since games were bouts lasting 3 innings with no third inning so there could be no retirement or retaliation chess matches followed thereafter until1895 when Regulation 10 changed giving pitchers 5 balls instead of 4 allowing runners to score resulting in forfeiture of almost all contests thereby making bowling green an exclusively residential community although some folks still ventured out to stake their claim to land beyond town limits even today especially during duck hunting season given how easy access most major cemeteries are these days including Anson Hill Cemetery where George Washington Dixon is buried remains open 24 hours per day 365 days per year free Admission! In 1945, following World War II and the Korean War, the city's population again increased as people left for military service. By 1960, however, Bowling Green's population had decreased to under 30,000. However, due to its location within Kentucky's "Second Congressional District", it remained an important political center until 2000 when it became part of Kentucky's Third Congressional District. Since then it has experienced strong growth with a current population of over 100,000 residents.

Bowling Green is the largest city in Hancock County by population. It is also one of the most populous cities in central Kentucky. The first known settlement in what is now Bowling Green was on a farmstead called Newtown which was founded about 1798 by George Washington Clarke and his wife Susannah Young Clarke. One hundred years later, David Ladd's family settled there and began to grow barley and wheat crops. They also built a log cabin from logs they found lying around their farmstead. In 1824, James Hancey bought Newtown from David Ladd and renamed it Bowling Green after his home town of Ballingarry in Ireland where he had been born two years earlier. In 1837, John Prentice established another farming community on land that became part of Bowling Green named Lawrenceburg (named for General George Lawrence). That same year, three brothers - Asahel, Charles Wirthlin and Solomon Pratt - erected a large frame house on Main Street near the present-day intersection of Murray Road and State Route 162. A year later they donated the building to the community as its first meetinghouse which served as an important center for religious services until 1907 when it was replaced by the current building which stands today on Mitchell Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street NW.. The early incorporated village of Bowling Green consisted of only a few families with no more than fifty residents because much of what we now know about town development comes from court records dating back to this time period which document shipments of lumber brought into town during various periods beginning with 1853 until 1865 when all trade within town ended due to difficulties associated with transportation infrastructure then being new . On March 3rd 1895, Mayor J B Bennett submitted written plans for incorporation of Bowmanstown approximately two miles east along Lexington Avenue NE between State Route 612 (which would become US 60) and Louisville Boulevard NW cornering US 64; these plans were accepted without objection by both houses of the General Assembly at their regular session convened that day .
