Ammunition history in Mount Washington, Kentucky began with the arrival of cannons in the area in the late 18th century. The first artillery pieces to be placed here were six-pounders, which were used for garrison duty and ceremonial purposes. By the early 19th century, however, heavy cannon had been arrived and were being used for battle by both sides. The first battle fought at Mount Washington took place on July 6, 1792 between Patriot forces led by General Andrew Jackson and Loyalist forces under Lord Cornwallis. The Patriots emerged victorious thanks to superior firepower from their cannons. This victory marked a turning point in American history as it showed that even though they were not able to win outright battles against well-armed opponents, patriot units could hold their own when facing determined Loyalists. In 1814, a new battery was established at Mount Washington after efforts failed to bring down then fortifications around town. At this time, Fort Donelson was becoming an obstacle to commerce and trade between Louisville and Lexington due to its location on the border of both towns. To circumvent Fort Donelson’s blockade, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his troops to cross over the Licking River into Kentucky on November 10th of that year in order to march upriver towards Fort Donelson without being detected by Union patrols stationed along the way. In what is now called Battle of Stones River (November 23rd), Confederate forces succeeded in driving out Union forces and capturing Fort Donelson. This event helped solidify southern support for secession from the United States during the Civil War. In 1861, Confederates again attempted an assault on Union positions at Stones River but this time they soon discovered that they couldn’t take advantage of terrain features such as natural obstacles or hillsides because they lacked artillery support. As a result, Confederate commanders decided against attacking altogether instead concentrating all their resources onto achieving goals such as recapturing Richmond before winter set in – an effort which ultimately failed due to logistical limitations.
