In 1881, Jeptha Gentry platted what is now Newport Township on land east of today's downtown area. It is thought that Gentry may have named his town after his brother-in-law's birthplace, Nantucket, Massachusetts. That year, Pemberton Brothers & Co., merchants from Knoxville procured an interest in Gentry's new township so they could start selling goods from their storerooms at Point Comfort dockside warehouse across from where the city now stands. This development led to what would become known as "The Old Town" – an upscale residential district west of downtown that still retains much of its original character despite over 200 years since its establishment! In 1925, when Louisville Consolidated Gas Company opened its new refinery on Cumberland Avenue just south of downtown (now part of University Hospital), industrialists interested in moving production east began buying up parcels along Cumberland Street between First Street and Third Street – which became known as The Strip! Newport, Kentucky is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kentucky and part of the Lexington metropolitan area. Newport grew rapidly over time as business interests developed within its vicinity: A sawmill was built near what is now Market Square in 1801; a store opened on Oliver Street in 1812; a cotton gin was erected on First Street in 1817; and steamboats began docking at what is now Dockers Dock (now part of downtown) around 1825. In 1865, local Congressman John Capps helped found the University of Kentucky and Newport quickly became one of its many campus base areas. The advent of automobiles made travel within Newport much easier than it had been before: By 1907 there were fourways available linking all parts of town; horse cars stopped serving everything south of Main Street between 1870 and 1920″ – making Big Daddy's restaurant "the only stop you would ever want to be without" according to then-Mayor Hugh Wimblett – while streetcar service ran until 1954 between downtown (then called "Dockers Dock") and various outlying districts including Rodney Park/Olde Towne(later renamed Highland Park), New Beginnings(now called SpringHill) East End(now known as Bellevue), etcetera In 1925, major job growth brought about construction of two industrial plants: The American Can Company plant on Court Avenue produced canning food for distribution throughout central KY while H&R Block operated a brickyard east side thereof which manufactured bricks for use both inside and outside buildings After independence from Great Britain following World War I, more businesses came online thanks to higher tariffs levied against imported goods by newly minted America – some examples include J & C Flowers Store which became one of America’s largest department stores via acquisition by Macy’s Corporation several years later ; Coca Cola Bottling Works began manufacturing soft drinks here starting with root beer while other brands followed such as Pepsi-Cola (1927); Pabst Brewing Division added beer production starting with Blue Ribbon Ale (1928); Addison Furniture store opened adjacent to Coca Cola Bottling Works becoming one “America’s First Department Store Chain With Outlets All Over The Country” according to contemporary writer Edwin Lefebvre ; finally Seagrams Distilling Corporation established distillery operations here beginning with their popular Seagram's Gin brandodka beginning production originally utilizing stills leased from Harry Bowman brewery .
