Gun lights were first used in Richmond, Kentucky, on October 3rd, 1875. A group of men from the town of Lexington had come to Richmond to buy some supplies for their farm and they were stopped by a group of men from nearby Cumberland who demanded to see their guns. The Lexington men didn’t have any weapons and the Cumberland men thought that they were just trying to be funny. One man got his gun light working and he started showding off to the other guys. This made the Cumberland men so angry that they started attacking the Lexingtonmen with their guns. It was only when one of the Lexingtonmen shot at one of the Cumberlandmen that things started getting serious. The result was that both groups arrived at a stalemate where each side had twoguns but no lights. The first gun light was probably built by John Stephenson in 1877 or 1878 while he was still working for George Stephenson’s machine shop in Manchester, England. It was a small oil-fired light bulb with a 36 inch arm which could be set up in an open space or inside a building as long as there was enough space for it to work properly. Gun lights were usually hung around doors or window sills so people could see what was going on outside without having to leave their homes. They also served as signals for warning others when someone had fired a gun and sometimes acted as indicators during military operations such as battles or raids. Some gunlights even became used as power tools because they could be run on gasoline instead of batteries! Gun lights continued being used in Richmond until about 1925 when they all disappeared completely due to prohibition laws passed by America’s government shortly after World War I ended with many countries including America joining Prohibitionism. Gun lights are still occasionally seen around rural areas today but are generally not used anymore since they are difficult (if not impossible) to operate without help!
