Thibodaux’s economy is based on its location as a transportation hub for goods moving between Alexandria and Hammond and also for manufacturing within the city limits. Manufacturing has been especially important in recent years due to advances in digital technologies which have made production easier and more efficient than ever before. There are several high-tech companies headquartered in Thibodaux including Analog Devices (ADI), Broadcom (AVGO), Qualcomm (QCOM), Sigma Designs (SSD) and Tyco Electronics (TYC). Thibodaux also boasts one of LSU’s largest student populations; around 60% of students attending local schools come from outside of Baton Rouge or Lafourche Parish. This allows for close interaction between students and their local communities which benefits both individuals and societies as a whole. Additionally, many businesses within Thibodaux rely heavily on student labor for tasks that are not easily filled by other workers because they cannot offer competitive wages commensurate with those offered elsewhere in southeast Louisiana or nationally. Breckinridge founded the city of New Orleans on the eastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain. When Breckinridge moved his headquarters to Baton Rouge in 1851, he left Thibodaux unincorporated. The commercial center of Thibodaux changed little until after World War II when it became an important manufacturing center for munitions and other products used by both sides in the war effort. Manufacturing jobs played a big role during the early years of Louisiana's oil boom and many people continued to work in this sector into the late 20th century; however, with refinery closures starting during the 1990s and 2000s,townsendville has taken over as its major economic engine since then
