On December 12, 1822, two settlements were merged to form Auburn: Auburn and Unadilla. The name "Auburn" originated from an Indian word meaning "place where deer are hunted." The first settler in Auburn was Isaac Phelps who came overland from Yorktown in 1795. Over time, other settlers arrived including John Fenton who built a sawmill in 1806; Levi Dickinson who platted the townsite in 1824; Nels Erikson who bought land from Phelps in 1830; Wm Hickey who also bought land from Phelps in 1830; James Weller who built a house on Main Street in 1840; Amos Morse whose family farm extended upriver to what is now Knowlton Academy; Daniel Webster founded Dexter's Store which served as a post office for many years until it closed in 1906; Anna Morse donated five acres of her property to make room for the current school site (now known as Park Avenue); and Ebenezer Codman helped build First Congregational Church (1834) and School House (1835). In 1870-71 Samuel Ketchum surveyed and settled what is now downtown Auburn with his brother John Ketchum becoming Mayoralty Judge for that year . In 1895-96 Albion Hitchcock organized what would later become known as the Gadsden Purchase which included parts of present day eastern Penobscot County along with much of present day western Maine . This purchase resulted from Congress passing legislation authorizing them to take title to any wild lands not already owned by white citizens within their borders . After purchasing most or all of this landincluding extending downriverto Hartwellsvilleand building new homes therehe began clearcutting trees for lumber which he processed into boards and then furniture before selling off some parcels for housing development beginning around 1900 called "Hitchcock Heights". By 1910 there were over 1000 houses/condos owneriedby individuals or businesses spanning across 4 blocks running perpendicular east-west on East Main Street with more than 400 stores & restaurants inside Revolution Plaza shopping center adjoining it throughout its heyday!During World War II production at Hitchcock Heights ceased due to wartime rationing but continued at nearby Union Mills where wood was turned into planes & tanks until 1945 When military shipments stopped again local mills went out of business & dismantled everything except remains whichantz later used as landfill
