The rifles were made from local white pine and had an octagonal barrel. They were fired with a hand-held cannon called a fowling piece. The guns were used to protect ships and people from British forces. The first handgun manufactured in Augusta was the Beretta M1911 pistol, which was created by gunsmiths from Italy in 1911. It became one of the most common handguns in America after being introduced into service by the United States military during World War I. At that time, there were no vessels larger than canoes or schooners capable of fishing in that bay so Smith set up an nets from his ship to catch lobster as far out as he could reach. The catches kept coming until 1810 when Commodore James Cook charted this coastline and discovered the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separated mainland Washington from Vancouver Island. This made it possible for ships to sail right past Cape Flattery without running aground on rocks which would have been catastrophic had they sunk! Since then, Augusta has become one of the most important ports for exporting lobster in Canada because of the quality and variety of seafood available here. There are also several restaurants specialising in seafood such as The Lobster Shack where you can enjoy fresh seafood combined with your favourite drinks or Pasta dishes made with fresh local ingredients like clams, shrimp & scallops etc

It is part of the Portland–Vancouver metropolitan area. Augusta was founded in 1817 by Increase Mather and others as a post office called "Milton". The name change occurred because it had been established as Milton on the banks of the river Merrimack which drained into Narragansett Bay. The first white person to arrive in what is now Augusta was Captain John Smith who landed there on July 15, 1769 with his ship Discovery. He and his men built Fort Augusta near present-day downtown Augusta on low ground that still stands today. In 1792, when George Washington became President of the United States, he took up residence at Mount Vernon near Petersburg and set about creating a national capital at Washington City. Two years later Congress passed An act for erecting a public building for the government of this Commonwealth—an act which provided for its future central location within this Province.—George Washington's Writings (1912), p. 565-566 In 1817 Increase Mather founded what would become Augusta as an outpost after purchasing land from Robert Treatwell along the river Merrimack east of wherepresent day Downtown Augusta sits
Augusta was first settled by English colonists in 1608. The town became a part of the United States in 1781. It was named for King George II of Great Britain.
