Biddeford is named after John Bidwell, an early settler. The first post office in Biddeford was established on November 15, 1853, and received its first mail from Bangor on December 2 of that year. In 1876, the name of the town changed to honor Colonel Augustus Higginson Bidwell (1815-1879), who donated 1/2 acre (0.40 km²) of land to the town for its incorporation as a village on February 3 of that year. According to the 2010 census, there are 714 people living in Biddefordtown limits - all residents of which are citizens or residents of incorporated areas within their respective townships or villages: Bangor Township (excluding part of downtown), Clinton Township (including most of downtown), Hancock County (excluding Winslow), Milton Township (including parts of what are now West Newington and East Newington), Southworth Township (excluding much of eastown downtown), Waterville Township (excluding much of northwestown downtown). According to unofficial projections made by the Maine Department Of Technology Services’ “Community Development Planning Program” during 2013-2018*, if current trends continue unchecked* then less than half – about 350 people* – will be served by annexed unincorporated communities located within townships and villages adjacent to Biddefordtown limits by 2021; fewer still will be served by any annexations into other municipalities outside those boundaries over that period even if dwellings [*dwellings] increase marginally (+1% per annum). A recent addition to this community development planning program has been adult literacy initiatives called Literacy For All! which focus on increasing reading achievement among adults aged 25 years or older through teacher training and placement programs targeting low-income students across grades 4-8*. Biddeford, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 693 at the 2010 census. Biddeford is part of the Bangor metropolitan area. The towns of Auburn and Caribou are located to the east and west respectively. The first permanent settler in what would become Biddeford was John Abbott who arrived in 1784. He founded a hamlet on the south side of the river which he named Abbottville after himself and his family members. In 1824, Aaron Smith settled in what is now Biddeford and built a cabin near present day Middlebrook Road. A few years later he purchased 3 acres (1 ha) of land on the north side of the river for $100 from Jens Jensen. This site became known as Smith's Promontory because it overlooked Rte 2 (now I-95). In 1829, Hanson Coolidge moved to Biddeford from Camden and started an ice cream parlor called "Hanson's Creamery". It remains one of Biddeford's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1851, Ebenezer Morse bought 1/2 acre (0.25 ha) of land on both sides of Main Street for $35 from Samuel Morse Sr.. This site became known as Morse Place because it served as an important stop on Route 9A when that route connected with Route 136 across the river from present day Portland, Maine
