It lies on the Kennebec River and is part of the Augusta-Augusta, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lewiston was James Gillett who came from what is now Kent, England in 1794. Gillett's grandson, John Gillett (1795-1868), founded a ferry company which became one of the most important transportation networks for goods and people in North America. In 1821, James McGill erected a toll bridge over the Kennebec River to connect Lewiston with Yorktown on the opposite bank. The town was platted on November 4, 1827 by Joseph Bicknell who named it after his father-in-law Amos Bassett (1777-1847). Lewiston had an active manufacturing industry until World War II when heavy reliance on agriculture began to take its toll and mills closed. However some businesses have reopened since then such as garment production by Sears Roebuck & Co., plastics manufacturer GEICO and software giant Microsoft. The community has seen population growth in recent years due to new development along Route 6A which forms its backbone commercial artery; including several high schools and apartment complexes developments. Lewiston is home to two museums: the local history museum and Bangor Regional History Museum which are both open daily 9am to 5pm except for holiday Mondays when they are open 10am to 3pm; both museums offer free admission for children under 12 years old during regular hours however there are also special exhibits available for those age groupings at no cost during certain months such as October through April when family event days are offered as well as occasional events at other times throughout the year that may be of interest to visitors including dinner theater nights at various bars/restaurants near campus upon request or even just popsicles! In addition to its rich cultural heritage housed within its own museums Lewiston offers 55 acres of parkland featuring Lake Winnipesaukee close by with trails leading all around it as well as tennis courts, basketball court and dog run perfect for rainy days or fun walks with your pup!
