Gun barrels have been a part of the Lewiston, Maine society for centuries. The first guns were made in Lewiston by local farmers in the early 1800s. In 1827, the town of Lewiston was founded on land that was once part of Androscoggin County and the town's first Mayor was John Downing. In 1839, gun barrels became a legal product in Maine when a state law passed. At that time, there were only threegun manufacturers in Maine: Samuel Colt and Company of Hartford, Connecticut; Smith & Wesson of Springfield, Massachusetts; and Webley & Scott of Aberdeen, Scotland. The popularity of firearms throughout America during this time led to demand for gun barrel production in Maine. By 1850, there were 10 gun barrel manufacturers in Maine and each one produced different types of barrels for their products. The most popular type of barrel at this time was the rifled barrel which allowed shooters to fire more rounds per minute with less effort than un-rifled barrels. When rifle cartridges began to become popular during the late 19th century, shotgunner barrels became necessary because shotguns could not be loaded with them safely without breaking them open. As pistol cartridge availability increased throughout much of America during this time period (the 1890s), shotgunner barrels became less common as they no longer served as efficient firers for handguns or rifles but instead became projectiles used solely by shotguns. By 1915, only two companies still manufacturing gun barrels remained in Maine: Winchester Manufacturing Company and Cook Brothers Barrel Works Incorporated (CBW). CBW had ceased production years earlier due to economic competition from other producers who had moved into shotgun production equipment during that decade. However, Winchester Manufacturing Company continued operations until 1923 when it closed its doors permanently due to financial difficulty caused by World War I shortages and changes within American firearm industry which forced companies such as Winchester Manufacturing Company outmoded designs that did not meet new needs created by gunmen across different calibers/firearms types over multiple decades prior thereto

The name "Lewiston" was derived from an English word meaning "place where lightnings flash." Lewiston grew rapidly during its early years and by 1853 had a population of 1,500 people. The first store in Lewiston opened in 1855 and soon became one of the most popular in the area. In 1865, Lewiston joined forces with Auburn to form the new town of Auburn but remained separate until 1912 when they merged into one entity under the name of Lewiston-Auburn-Farmington (LAF). In 1916, LAF merged with neighboring towns Farmington and Portland to form what is now known as Portland Regional Council (PRC). As part of this merger, Lewiston lost its independence but retained its nickname as "the last great American city." During World War II,Lewiston played an important role as a military base for local farmers supplying troops with food and materials necessary for war production

Lewiston is a town in southern Maine, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is the seat of Lewiston and Ayer Counties. The town was founded in 1836 by brothers John and James Allen. It became a incorporated municipality in 1955. Lewiston is located at (45.736902, -75.660972). According to the USGS, it lies on the Penobscot River at its confluence with the Salmon River. According to the history of Maine, Lewiston was first inhabited by Native Americans: "The land now known as Lewiston was occupied by various nations before European exploration arrived in this area in 1795." By 1800, there were about 25 buildings and three families living hereabouts; however most residents had fled during the War of 1812 because of American military activity around that time period near Mount Desert Island which then lay just offshore from downtown Lewiston. In 1836, two brothers named John and James Allen purchased from Pierre Bertrand some 640 acres (24 hk) east of what is now downtown Lewington for $10 per acre ($4 million today). The Allen family developed much of what is now centralLewiston over several decades; their extensive construction work including building a sawmill and gristmill soon created new wealth for their community which rapidly grew thanks to their exports such as lumber and flourexport receipts totaling $2 million between 1850 and 1860 alone! In 1865 when Maine became a state, Bangor became its capital; but due to population growth in Lewiston caused by new transportation methods like steamboats), Allan decided to incorporate his town into an adjacent county – thereby becoming one “city” with separate services available both within his own city limits (the core or business district) as well as within neighboring towns/villages which bordered on his city’s limits (Ayer County). This demonstrates how significant commercial development could be both horizontally AND vertically across mid-20th century provincial boundaries not only through incorporation but also through more concerted efforts by elected officials who realized that commerce would increasingly become an important factor shaping public policy along regional lines
Lewiston was founded in 1799 by John Jacob Astor, the founder of the New York banking dynasty. The town's first post office was established in 1807. In 1838, Lewiston became a city and was renamed after Maine's first governor, Franklin Pierce.
