Lewiston, Maine is a small town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 3,746 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is home to the Lewiston-Auburn municipality and one of two towns in Cumberland County (the other being Auburn). The first settlement in the area now known as Lewiston was made by English colonists in 1609. The town was named for General John Forbes Lewisham, who served as an officer in the American Revolution. Lewiston had a post office from 1828 until 1957. The history of Lewiston begins with early hunting and fishing campsites that were used by Native Americans during their winter months. In 1785, French traders traveled through the area and discovered lead ore on nearby Mount Desert Island. They began to mine this valuable resource and built mills around 1810. This led to the development of what is now downtown Lewiston. By 1830,Lewiston had become an important commercial center due to its location on the Susquehanna River between Lancaster and Yorktown counties. As more people moved into the area during the 1800s, they started building homes and businesses around downtownLewiston; many of these buildings still exist today including The Masonic Temple (1879), First National Bank (1893), State House (1907), Union Depot(1914), and Globe Life Insurance Company Building (1963). In 1916, General Electric established its headquarters in downtownLewistn after purchasing other companies throughout New England. This led to increased business activity throughout downtownLewistn which continues today with numerous restaurants, theaters, stores and more.. In 1924 local developer George Littrell developed what is now called Eastown which included much of what is today Downtown Lewistn including most of Central Park Drive.. During World War II many businesses closed because of war-time rationing but some such as Globe Life Insurance Company Building survived until 1987 when it was purchased by AIG Financial Services Corporation; it currently houses both an insurance company office space and retail store space along with several residential units.. In 1951 local resident Maurice VanDervere donated land near Central Park Drive for use as a shopping mall which became known as West Mall.. During the late 1990s/early 2000s local developers redeveloped portions of Eastown into mixed-use housing while demolishing older buildings/commercial spaces adjacent to Central Park Drive creating a new plaza which faces North Street .. In 2006 Mayor Jodi Dowlin announced plans for renovations that would reintroduce live music to DowntownLewistn following years without it .. After years of planning work completed in 2013-2015 DowntownLewistn rebranded itself "The Square" .. Today DowntownLewistn offers a wide variety Of retail shops & services along with several restaurants & bars making it one of Maine's most vibrant neighborhoods
