On July 10, 1807, Congress passed an act incorporating the towns of Auburn and Lewiston as counties in Maine. The town of Lewiston was chartered on December 6, 1832 by a vote of residents at a meeting held in the courthouse square. At that time it contained only about 100 people and was located along what is now Route 1A (now US Route 20). Lewiston became an important river port for early settlers because it lay within easy reach of both sea ports on timber rivers such as the Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers. The economy boomed during World War II when munitions were produced at nearby Bangor Naval Base and elsewhere in Maine; however, after 1945 recession struck hardest here than anywhere else in New England due to high oil prices and other factors. In recent years there has been growth in businesses linked with tourism including art galleries and a variety of food stores around Main Street near where shipbuilding once thrived; but many people still live here close to nature or work downtown doing things like gardening or technology consulting. Lewiston is a town in, and the county seat of, Penobscot County, Maine. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, ME-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers arrived in 1692 on horseback from Boston under the name of "The Elders." They were led by John Endicott. By 1723 most of what is now Penobscot County had been claimed by the British Crown as part of New England. In 1768 King George II granted to James Poultney an exclusive patent for all land east of Quebec City (the present-day Canadian province of Quebec). This area lay within what are now Penobscot and Oxford counties. Poultney's grant included much of modern Lewiston and its neighbor Androscoggin Township. In 1802 Lewiston became a town when it was formed as one result of a merger between Androscoggin Township and parts of neighboring Queensbury Township. At that time there were only 7 residents in Lewiston; by 1840 there had grown to over 100 with businesses such as gristmills, sawmills, butter factories and various other enterprises brought together to form a single town center that still exists today. Lewiston was named after General David Porterfield who served in the American Revolution and later led an unsuccessful attempt to retake Canada from British forces during the War for Independence (1775-1783). Porterfield's remains are interred at Prospect Cemetery in downtown Lewiston near where he lived before his death in 1807 at age 42 years old while serving as Colonel Commandant with troops loyal to America during that war - one year before Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown Heights following failed British efforts to reestablish control over North America
