The first issue of "The Gleaner" was published in May of that year. In 1870, Captain Jameson built a Custom House on Commercial Street which served as the nucleus for the present day South Portland Gun Club. From its inception until World War II, the South Portland Gun Club operated out of two buildings on Commercial Street: First Floor (later known as the Administration Building) and Second Floor (later known as the clubhouse). The club held many functions such as meeting to discuss local politics, shooting matches, and other events. During World War II, gun magazine operations were suspended due to wartime restrictions placed upon ammunition manufacturers. However, resumed operations occurred after repeal of these restrictions in 1945. From 1945 through 1957, the club printed its own issues of "The Gleaner". After this time period commenced Featuring Periodical Publications from various publishers including United Press International and American News Service among others it became an integral part of local life with continued publication until 1992 when it stopped production entirely due to budgetary constraints brought about by changes within local government entities. Since then there has been periodic re-release or reprinting of both paper copies and electronic versions throughout most every year with some exceptions like during Presidents' Day weekend which falls on a Saturday. A few years back they alsoeonported digital files but these are no longer being reprinted because they become too large to be reproduced electronically without losing quality elements like illustrations etcetera
