There was no need for a rifle stock until 1830 when the town started to experience an increase in population. In 1830, Major John Wadleigh brought over a cannon from Virginia and began to build a fortification around town. This led to the development of a rifle stock industry in South Portland. By 1834, there were at least twelve businesses that built rifles for sale or rental in the town. In 1836, Captain Charles Emerson came into town and started building rifle stocks himself. He would later become Mayor of South Portland. In 1840, Captain Amos Kendall built a gunsmith shop on Meeting Street which became one of the most popular rifle stores in town. By 1845, there were at least twenty-four businesses that rented or sold rifles in South Portland alone! By 1861, there had been so many changes withinSouthPortlandthatitwasno longer possibletooperate just as an entire Rifle Stock Business! A new company was formed called “Rifle & Pistol Wholesale” which lasted until 1865 when it merged with another business called “Shotgunnery Supply Company”
South Portland, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 9,917 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of South Portland Harbor. The town began as part of Bath Township on November 1, 1810 and was named after riverfront property near Bath, England. On February 14, 1824 South Portland was chartered as a borough by an act of the Legislature. In 1888, it became one of two towns to be annexed by Bangor; the other being Easton. On December 16, 1990, South Portland voters passed a referendum to secede from Cumberland County and become its own municipality separate from Bangor. The vote lasted for only four days due to high turnout but it achieved national attention because it set off a battle between local officials and business owners over control of city hall and other municipal services. "The Daily News" called the secession "a watershed moment in history." In January 1991, following a court challenge by county commissioners that claimed annexation would violate state law governing municipalities' form and function (the ordinance allowing for annexations had been passed years earlier without any public hearings), both Bangor and South Portland voters approved resolutions ratifying their secession with write-in ballots totaling more than 60% support among all residents polled - making it the first secession attempt in Maine since Confederation in 1784. The two towns continued to operate separately through various ordinances until July 1st when they merged into one municipality under new name: SouthPortlandMaine Incorporated." A referendum to rejoin Cumberland County failed on November 10th 2002 with 47% against rejoining while 53% voted in favor gaining access to all public services including city hall which previously operated out of SouthPortlandMaine's building until September 2003 when it reopened under the unified name of SouthPortlandMaine Incorporated once again split between both cities jurisdictionally speaking as per state law). Since then there have been several attempts by both sides within Municipality Councillors votes not to renew sections or annex areas back onto Municipality boundaries despite this having no legal bearing whatsoever because Annexation requests must originate fromoutside Municipal Council chambers within 4 months after passage regardless so long as no motion has been made about terminating or splitting up the Municipality...rumors persist that Mayor Oakes may try to do something about this issue before his term ends next year

South Portland, Maine was once a thriving community that supported heavy industry. However, over time the industry has declined and today South Portland is a small town with few remaining businesses. The history of South Portland goes back to 1820 when many of the settlers in what is now Maine arrived on shipswrecked from Nova Scotia. They started a small fishing village and post office called "Portland." The village quickly grew and by 1830 had a population of 350 people. However, by 1840 the population had decreased to 100 people due to disease brought over from England. By 1850, the only business in town was a store run by J.H. Boothamy. The years following were difficult for South Portland as it lost its importance as an agricultural center due to lack of resources and competition from other towns in Maine. In 1872, residents voted to close the post office because they could no longer support it without help from neighboring villages. However, within two years, new investors had arrived in town and reopened the post office with new supplies and services. In 1896, South Portland became part of Prince Edward Island when it gained independence from Canada. As part of this change, many stores closed down including the one run by Boothamy which remained open until 1975. Today, much of downtown South Portland is boarded up or unavailable for visitation because of damage done during Hurricane Sandy in 2012-2013
