Waterville is a small town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 541 at the 2000 census. Waterville is part of the Bangor-Augusta-Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1812, Waterville was established as a small post office on the east side of Waterville Lake. It was renamed to Waterville in 1821 after Captain John Waterville and his family moved there from Sunderland, England. In 1830, the town had a population of just over 100 people and it incorporated as an organized municipality in 1840. The first oil well in Maine was drilled near Waterville in 1892 and production began soon thereafter. In 1903, the townsite that includes present day Waterville became part of the Mahlon Oil Field which yielded more than $1 million worth of revenue for both towns during its heyday. By 1907, however, production stopped due to depletion of resources and Mahlon operations were sold to other companies including Pennzoil Corporation which reopened the field two years later with new technology yielding additional profits for both communities along with employment opportunities for locals. In 1916 when World War I ended hostilities in Europe and America's entry into World War I made possible increased imports of munitions by railroads across Canada (the "Great Depression"), significant investment followed by increased production at Mahlon led to another increase in town's GDP when measured against pre-Depression levels; this period is also generally referred to as "The Golden Age" of Waterville oil production or simply "The Early 20th Century". In 1933, following much debate over whether or not Waterville should become an incorporated city because its economic vitality outstripped that of neighboring Augusta due largely to its agricultural sector - although incorporation did provide some benefits such as representation on local boards - incorporation finally occurred effective November 1st under Mayor Akeley's leadership becoming one step closer towards eventual community self-governance; this event marks what has come to be known as The Town Council Act Era (1933–present). Akeley served continuously until his death on December 15th, 1988 having been mayor for 42 years making him oneof only six mayors New England has ever had who have held that position longer than 2 terms consecutively; he remains one third generation descendant of Captain John Waterville who foundedwaterville post office back in 1812
