By Mark A. Kammerer In the town of Westbrook, Maine, there is a statue to Wilt Chamberlain. It was dedicated in 1984 and is located on the property of the town's only high school. The statue has become a symbols of local success and community pride. Westbrook was founded in 1818 by John Westbrook and his brother Amos. The first post office opened in 1824 and the first store was established in 1830. In 1851, the town had a population of seventy-five people and two stores. By 1860, the population had grown to one hundred twenty-six people and six stores. In 1870, Westbrook became a part of Penobscot County and incorporated as a village. The population reached one thousand ninety-six people by 1880 but declined to nine hundred fifty-eight people by 1890 due to increased immigration from Canada and other parts of America. The development of transportation made Westbrook an important center for trade during the 19th century. A wagon road ran through Westbrook from 1800 until it was replaced by railroads in 1900. In addition, wells were drilled nearby which led to increased production throughout what is now central Maine during this time period; however, no significant economic development occurred until after World War I when serious industry began arriving from Canada with new technology that allowed for larger output than ever before possible withoutmuch impact on local communities or resources such as water supply or farmland available for occupation or use by locals (Fowler 1978). Wilt Chamberlain's visit to Westbrook in 1984 gave rise to much interest within the community about how he could have impacted their town economically if he had been living locally at that time instead of traveling near Boston where he played professional basketball (Greenberg 1990; Fowlkes 1992). This renewed interest has resulted in donations being made towards restoration efforts for the statue which are ongoing today (Luther 1990a).

Westbrook, Maine is a small town in the heart of the Acadia Mountains. The town was first settled by English settlers in 1784. The present-day town was named for General George Westbrook, who served as an officer in the American Revolution and later became a U.S. Senator from Maine. In 1842, Westbrook built the first printing presses in what is now Westbrook Village and served as its first mayor. The towns growth continued until the early 20th century when it shrunk due to heavy military presence in the area and industry development outside of town. As of 2010, Westbrook had a population of approximately 350 people. The history of Westbrook can be traced back to 1784 when English colonists arrived in what is now Maine and founded what would become known as Westbrook Township on land that they purchased from Chief Sekouwitka. At this time, there were no permanent settlements located within modern-day Maine; instead, these colonists relied on trading posts along the Penobscot River for goods and services necessary for their subsistence living. In 1792, General John Forbes landed at Kowamish on his way to join America’s war against Great Britain which ended with British recognition of independence from Great Britain two years later In 1812, after signing Treaty Of Utica agreeing to recognize Russia’s control over eastern New York following their War For Independence (1811-14), United States President James K Polk ordered Commodore Samuel Sloat sails into Georgian Bay on July 24th off Mount Desert Island seeking entrance into Canada but only encountered friendly natives who welcomed him ashore with sumptuous meals He then ordered his flagship USS Constitution (1812) – armed only with cannon – backed up by USS Perry he entered Canadian waters; this event helped solidify American dominance over North America during the era Afterward, local residents began searching for opportunities to establish themselves within newly independent America In 1824/25 general Henry Dearborn explored central New England via boat before landing at Portland Harbour on October 14th where he met Captain John Winthrop Aldrich who became one of the charter members of Overseerage Company chartered by Secretaryof State James Monroe Dearborn soon realized that there was potential for commerce along those rivers which he subsequently recommended to President Andrew Jackson Jackson approved construction of a road from Bangor through Brunswick County to Auburn which commenced in 1830 but never reached its full potential because local farmers refused to allow transportation across their land Jackson called upon Colonel Lewis Cass about building a road out front However Cass declined because he felt it would be more profitable for him build roads leading away from his holdings
Westbrook was founded in 1795 by John Westbrook, a whaling captain who named the town after himself. The first store in the town was built on what is now Main Street. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1836 it had over 100 residents. In 1851, Westbrook became a city and was renamed to its current name.
