In the year 1912, Westbrook, Maine was one of the most prosperous small towns in New England. The town had a population of around 350 people and it consisted of five blocks square. In that time, there were only two tools stores in town - one on Main Street and the other on Second Street. Out of those two stores, only one remained in business for more than 50 years. That store was called The Tool Works and it was run by four men - P. H. Dutton, Wm. Aiken, Burt Gourley and Ernest Jorgensen. The Tool Works was a major player in the tool industry throughout most of its history. It produced different types of tools including drills, saws, hammers and chisels - all of which were used to create many different products such as woodworking machines, fences and gates. Additionally, The Tool Works also exported their products to various parts of the world including Europe and Asia-Pacific. One of The Tool Works' biggest achievements during its long lifespan was becoming one of the first companies to produce an automated drilling machine called The Driller (1912). This machine allowed farmers all over New England to drill wells without having to use hand drills or tackle trucks! Additionally, The Tool Works helped pioneer the use of power drills in woodworking by producing their own model called The Power Drill (1914). Westbrook, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. Westbrook was platted in 1849 and became a incorporated town in 1903. The name "Westbrook" comes from Westbrook Township, York County, Pennsylvania which was ceded to Hancock County by President James K. Polk on November 8, 1846 as part of the Missouri Compromise; it was not given to the township by him but by General Henry Knox who made that offer during his visit to Hancock County on October 25th, 1846. The first settler in what is now Westbrook were John and Deborah Stout who arrived in 1800 from England via Gloucesterport on Long Island; they built a log cabin near present day Main Street and named it "Stroud's Village". They later moved to where their home still stands on State Highway 2 across from McKay's Tavern (now known as Bigelow's Bar). In 1825 a group of five farmers petitioned for town government and were granted a charter as "Westbrook Township", The original nucleus of what would become Westbrook were two schools: one erected by Elijah Howe in 1794 at what is now Broadway & Westcott Streets; the other erected by Amos Stoddard just south of present day Depot Square about 1830-32 along with an meeting house and four small houses for school use. In1849 when George Washington Woodward purchased 5 acres east of Uptown for $150 he laid out an attractive streetscape around his home called Woodward's Row - becoming one of the most popular towns in Maine based largely upon its wagon road system which ran through its center providing access to all sorts of products available throughout much of Canada and points south including Boston Harbor - making it easily accessible even while traveled over snow or ice chains!
