Rockville has had a gun history dating back to the Revolutionary War. A number of guns were used in that conflict, including rifles and pistols. The town passed an ordinance forbidding the carrying of firearms without a license in 1792. It was repealed in 1848. In 1793 following Captain John Smith's discovery of a large natural harbor in this area at Anacostia Point on March 11th (present day Mount Vernon), Rocksville began to grow rapidly as new traders arrived to trade with this valuable resource; including several brothers who ran a successful ferry service across the river between Georgetown and Anacostia until 1824 when they were replaced by steamboats operating from Navy Yard at Annapolis which made shipping much more convenient for both merchants and passengers based upon reliable weather predictions about upcoming storms that could havoc Alongshore shipping routes during winter months; these ships could then be unloaded at either Naval Yard or around Half Moon Bay where goods would be offloaded onto wagons or carts for shipment back East during warm summer months! By 1827 there were over 100 people living in Rocksville with 10 stores/houses plus 2 blacksmiths/weavers shops & 1 schoolhouse/, while 5 Parishesses lived hereabouts & 1 serjeant lived in Georgetown! All told there must have been quite some activity taking place hereabouts because within only 5 years RocksVILLE had outgrown its original location resulting in incorporation into Prince Georges County! In 1825 local resident Nicholas Biddle donated land adjacent to National Pike (now Greenbelt Road) south of today’s Rockville Center to make way for a public square; which was later renamed Fort Meade Park after General Meade who served as Commander-in-Chief American Expeditionary Forces during World War I & II. This park features a memorial statue dedicated to soldiers killed or wounded while serving our country Allies during World War I as well as WWII Memorial Wall featuring photos/memorabilia from many different wars fought throughout history along with current military hardware displays! The population continued to grow rapidly until approximately 1860 when most residents moved away due various reasons such as industrialization (& increased competition from Baltimore), annexation by Frederick County (1862), loss of religious freedom following emancipation (1865) & heavy military presence (& associated pollution) surrounding Washington D.C.(1917). At this time only 4 stores remained open within ROCKVILLE limits making it one of smallest towns in America (& also one of few still existing less than 50 years after its incorporation!). Today only 2 store fronts remain within ROCKVILLE limits although all 3 businesses are still operational providing key services essential to daily life including grocery shopping, tire sales etc.; despite being surrounded by new subdivisions implemented since 2010!!
