Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. The Salisbury Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings which includes some of the most significant buildings and sites in the town. The first permanent settler in what would become Salisbury was John Smith in 1778. However, it was not until 1821 when James Hartsfield purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of present-day Salisbury and laid out a Township Plan for that area which included what would eventually be called Salisbury. In 1824, Hartfield donated another 500 acres (200 hectares) to the Township for use as agricultural land. The town's site became known as "Hartfield Hundred." In 1827, businessman James Gadsden bought 1 acre (0.40 hectare) of land just north of present-day Salisbury from Hartfield for $100 cash. Gadsden named his new settlement "Gadsden's Landing." He developed this initial community into one of the most thriving towns in Prince George's County with its large market place and cotton gin/mule cart road junction ('the Gadsden Road'). In 1830, Samuel Morse moved to Gadsden Landing and set up his own telegraph line between Baltimore and Washington D.C., starting what would be known as America's First Telephone Company on May 10th, 1830 – thus beginning wiring throughout America by electricity! By 1840 there were over 100 residents living in Gadsdan Landing including printer Elijah Lovett who published Maryland Gazette from that location from 1837 until 1863; lawyer Alfred Biddle;and physician Drury Woodbridge among many others! It wasn't long before other businesses followed suit with stores such as A & W Brewery opening in 1842 opposite Eliza Duncan’s bakery; J C Cooke store opening in 1861; Collins & Son bakery opened 1865 - becoming one of the most successful bakeries west of the Susquehanna River after moving to their current location on Independent Street near US Route 11 years later! This vibrant community soon prospered thanks to its high quality white bread products which drew shoppers away from larger cities such as Baltimore or Washington D.C.. It wasn’t until 1862 that saloons could legally open within town limits although they had been operating prior thereto! As business grew so did crime however this didn’t stop people from enjoying life outside their doors even during tough times with JA Rule being enacted ordering local police forces not to frisk citizens without cause ie “No Billiard Hall For White People In Town" . Many saloons closed due to economic difficulties during prohibition but reopened again once Prohibition ended following General Sherman's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1919...thus continuing tradition alive today where live music concerts are held every month at various venues all aroundtown featuring some amazinglocal talent!

Salisbury is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area. The first known permanent European settlers in what would become Salisbury were three families from England who arrived in 1675 and named their land "Salisbury." In 1751, when the Province of Maryland was created from parts of Virginia and North Carolina, Salisbury became part of Prince George's County. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its accessibility to transportation (the Susquehanna Railroad crossed through Salisbury). By 1881, Salisbury had a post office, six churches, twelve stores, seven hotels/inns, one school and five sawmills. In 1892, local farmers founded the first agricultural society in Prince George's County as an effort to improve their crops. Today many businesses still operate within the town limits: All-Star Market near downtown; Banks Mill Paper Company; Bedminster Cheese Factory; Buttermilk Hill B&B; Chuckwalla’s BBQ & Grill; Danforth Furniture; Greyhound Bus Terminal Complex In 1915, during World War I (1914-18), Salisbury residents organized a volunteer battalion called "The White Rose" which served with distinction in field hospitals across Europe. After the war ended, many veterans returning home decided to move back into former German neighborhoods such as Germantown and Mount Vernon so that they could continue working on farms or restoring homes after being homeless or displaced during wartime. As more Americans moved into this area during the late 20th century there were increased efforts by officials and citizens to clean up vacant lots around town while also developing new businesses that attracted customers from all over eastern Maryland including those living in Washington D.C., Northern Virginia Beach and even Delaware Bayou City outside of Baltimore! Today much like then both locals and visitors enjoy stunning views of Downtown Baltimore while enjoying eclectic shopping options found throughout most every business district including art galleries along Benning Road overlooking Mount Vernon Cemetery while exploring charming small towns scattered throughout rural areas east of Interstate 95 including New Hope Church Historic District with its distinctive Gothic Revival architecture dating back to 1795 before becoming a National Monument following designation by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 followed by updates under Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt Conservation Act (42 U.S.C §4122) & Lyndon Johnson Federal Land Management Act (12 U S C §1541) as well as smaller communities located within easy reach such as Underhill Village just off Route 1A about 15 minutes west of downtown on rolling farmland surrounded by woods accessible only by foot or bike!
