Smeaton named his new farm "Takoma". In 1867, he laid out streets and developed buildings including a school and store on land now known as Watkins Street near present-day Columbia Heights. From 1870-1910, growing numbers of people immigrated to Prince George's County: Poles (1870), Germans (1879), Irish Catholics (1903), Italians (1920s), Japanese Americans (1945). Many of these immigrants founded large farms or towns along the Susquehanna River Valley outside Frederick or Bowie counties while others settled in areas such as Takoma Park or College Hill. As many as 20% of all residents in Prince George's County were foreign born by 1900; this number increased to 50% by 1940 when immigration peaked due to World War II shortages of workers and other factors

After World War II ended, things began to change for Takoma Park as economic development stalled outside of downtown. Businesses moved away from central areas towards larger malls or suburban neighborhoods; however, many cultural institutions remain within town boundaries today including Art Gallery Of Baltimore (AGOB), Stroud Museum Of American History (SMASH), and Takoma Playhouse (TPK). Despite this trend towards suburbia,residential development has continued throughout the 2000s with several high-rise buildings being constructed along Eastern Boulevard between Forest Glen Drive and Federal Street – giving passersby a beautiful view right up until your nose!

Takoma Park was founded in 1847 as a small community on the west side of Takoma Hill in MD. It became an incorporated town in 1922 and annexed by Washington, D.C., in 1932. The population of Takoma Park increased from around 1,000 in 1922 to over 30,000 by 1957. In that year, the first racially integrated school opened in Takoma Park.
