Holyoke, Massachusetts is a town in the United States. The population was 18,898 at the 2010 census. Holyoke is part of Worcester County and is bordered by Worcester to the east, Springfield to the north, Amherst to the west, and Northampton to the south. Holyoke's name comes from an English place called "Holkney" meaning "holy well." In 1847–48, local farmers burned down several buildings in what is now downtown for lack of insurance money they had been promised from state legislators who proposed creating a state highway through their townships. This led to increased calls for government regulation of private enterprise which would lead to stricter building codes in subsequent years. One notable event that took place during this time period was an anti-slavery rally held at Central Park on July 4th 1865 led by abolitionists Daniel Webster and Obed Macy
