Leominster, Massachusetts is a town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, located in the central region of New England. The population was 25,871 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Leominster, Suffolk, England. The first Europeans to visit what is now Leominster were French traders and missionaries who came up from Québec in 1621. They built Fort Duquesne on the present-day site of North Street and Market Street in 1624 as part of their exploration of this new area. In 1627, English colonists arrived at Plymouth Rock and founded Plymouth colony. One group led by Captain John Smith landed at Leominster on November 15th, 1627 with about 50 men and women under the leadership of Revd Samuel Willard (1612-1676). At that time it was one of only a few settlements in New England not under royal control. In 1701 British troops burned down all but three buildings in the town center while they were withdrawing from Boston during King George's War (1704-1707). In 1768 an act was passed to give future residents "a certain share" in Revolutionary War spoils regardless of whether or not they had taken part in hostilities. This act became known as "The Leominster Act". Leominster recorded its first census for land purposes on February 12th, 1801 with a population of 553; it grew to 10,023 by 1850 when railroad construction interrupted development along both sides of the river between Worcester and downtown Leominster; however manufacturing continued to grow until World War II when most local production switched to munitions plants elsewhere due to damaged infrastructure caused by bombings during that war. After 1945 much retail business stopped because there was no market for such things post-war; however some light industry has continued including two small garment factories which produce very high quality items like Checks & Balances belts
