Revere is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The Revere Canal ran through the town until 1852. The first European to visit what is now Revere was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after his patron saint, Rovere (or Redevere). A wooden bridge over the canal was built in 1637 by Capt. John Winthrop and Lt. David Willett, three members of Samuel Seward's company that had been sent along for reinforcements during the English Civil War (1642-46). Captain John Smith also sawed down a tree near where present-day Quincy Market stands to make a false endowment for his library which he named "Smith's Point" because of its location on what would later be called Winthrop Street (now Beacon Hill). In 1774, during King George III's American Revolution, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gage ordered General Edmund Burke to march into Boston with 10 thousand British regulars under cover of darkness and seize all goods imported into or exported from Boston without specific warrants or licenses. Many merchants in Salem and other towns stirred up trouble by reporting this move as an act of freedom fighting against tyranny; however Gage knew better than to take any chances with such a large force enteringBoston unannounced without provocation from anyone and went ahead with his plan anyway US Ambassador William Howe arrived in Boston on October 15th and made contact with Gage who said there were no problems but then asked about tea being smuggled into America from China On November 3rd Jonathan Edwards preached at St Paul's Chapel sermonizing about how Americans should resist British rule On November 11th warning shots were fired by Patriots outside King George III's Palace prior to dinner within which several people were killed including two ministers who refused to answer questions After dinner some patriots marched into Roxbury before retreating back out again gunfire continued while they ate their dinner
