In 1846, John Davenport moved to Detroit from Chicago and became its first mayor with help from Governor Nicholas Butler Addison Davenport Sr.. During World War II, Dearborn Heights played an important role in developing Bomber Command Headquarters located adjacent to Ford Field which housed RAF Bomber Command operations during hostilities against Nazi Germany The current skyline of Dearborne Heights was built up around two major industrial sites: Ford Motor Company's main manufacturing plant for cars and trucks on Woodward Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Morningside Drive directly across from Hamtramck Lake; and aluminum production on Woodward Avenue between Gratiot Avenue and Elmira Road just south of North Central High School
