The Dearborn Heights area has been inhabited by various cultures for centuries. The first European settlers arrived in 1835 and named the area "Dearborn". They were led by John Dearborn, an American politician and landowner who later became governor of Michigan. A post office was established at Dearborn Heights in 1837, and the town began to grow rapidly. In 1840, Dearborn completed a bridge over the Maumee River which made it easier for people to get around and commerce grew quickly. By 1860, Dearborn had annexed part of neighboring village of Orion Township. Dearborn Heights experienced rapid growth during World War II as manufacturing components for airplanes became important during the war effort. In 1945, Area residents approved annexation of what is now Riverside Township to form Dearborn Heights as a separate municipality with its own government and school district. The city's population peaked at 27,814 in 1950 but declined thereafter due to suburbanization within Wayne County and natural attrition from low birth rates among African Americans throughout most of Detroit's inner core (the "inner ring"). However, population growth resumed beginning in 1960 when many new homes were built near Interstate 95 just outside of downtown Dearborn Heights limits; this caused an increase in traffic on Woodward Avenue which disrupted public transportation services inside the city center while also increasing air pollution levels within the limits. In recent years there have been efforts to reverse some demographic trends within Dearborn Heights - such as increased concentrations of poverty or crime - through policies that focus on cultural diversity or job opportunities for young people living in poverty or gangs involved with drugs or violence
