The city proper occupies only a small portion of what once constituted Dearborn Heights; today's neighborhoods include Northfield Park, Wealthy Hills and Southpointe. The history of Dearborn Heights can be traced back to 1836 when John Dearborn donated land to create the town of Dearborn Heights on which he lived with his family until his death in 1847. In 1870, the town changed its name to Dearborn Township after George Hiaasen donated 600 acres (2 km²) south of downtown for municipal purposes. On November 1, 1898, as part of an effort to consolidate all municipalities withinDetroit into one community, Dearborne Heights merged with other communities including Highland Park and Oakland Park to form the City of Detroit. Today’sCity Of Detroit forms only a small fraction of what once constituted Dearborn Heights; today’s neighborhoods include Northfield Park, Wealthy Hills and Southpointe along side much older homes such as those found near Woodward Avenue or Midtown Center which date back to before World War II when transportation problems caused many streets in these areas to close off making it difficult for residents access shopping malls or other commercial properties nearby during weekday hours.
Dearborn Heights was a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Dearborn Heights was founded on July 4, 1837 by farmers from Highland Township in what is now Sterling Heights and Dexter Township in what is now Midland City. Dearborn Heights first attracted interest due to its location as one of the few places in Wayne County that could be reached by horse and buggy. The commercial development started immediately after the railroad arrived and soon included a hotel, store, grain elevator, brewery and other businesses. The city's growth continued through the years with annexations of other towns until it had a total population of 24,972 in 1920. Growth slowed during World War II as many people left for military service; however, it resumed growth following the war when new jobs became available in munitions manufacturing and shipbuilding. This growth continued until the late 1990s when there were only 714 residents living in Dearborn Heights according to the 2000 census
