Polk established a military post there as part of his abortive invasion of Upper Canada. A fortification named for General Polk was built on now-demolished Fort Harrison in 1815 near present-day downtown Midland, but it was abandoned within a year due to lack of supplies and troops. In 1847, two companies from Illinois arrived in midwestern Michigan and began exploring for land where they could establish new settlements. One group reached what is now Muskegon Heights while another reached what is now downtown Midland before turning back because they found no suitable location for their proposed town on the peninsula. In early 1848, commissioners decided that an area south of Third Street between Wealthy Road (now Business Park Drive) and Washtenaw Avenue would be suitable for development as a town but no action was taken until January 25, 1850 when local residents John Sibalis, Elijah Henson, Abram Bechtel and others met at First Presbyterian Church to form the Township Committee under direction of Reverend Samuel Fenton with majority representation from African Americans who had come intomidtown during times of racial tension between white settlers and Native Americans over control of lands around Cassville Creek across from Battle Creek (present day White River). On July 1, 1850 John Sibalis filed a petition with Wayne County Circuit Court seeking incorporation as a village because he felt that his small community would not have sufficient support if it remained unincorporated; however this petition was denied without prejudice on September 9th due to lack evidence thaticularly viable business or agricultural enterprises existed within its boundaries which would make it economically feasible to maintain such an establishment; thus disbanding Township Committee without anyvillage having been organized thereby fulfilling prophecy made by Reverend Fenton less than two months earlier about "the Erecting Village" being founded within minutes following birth of township committee's organization! A second request for incorporation followed on December 5th this time naming Midland Village Incorporation No.. 2 as an effort to raise money necessary towards building infrastructure such as roads, schools and churches – allrequirements laid out in ordinance approved November 4th 1865 by Territorial Legislature meeting held atMuskegon Hall adjacent to present day North Campus Library including bank branches & grocery stores! New Townsite plat map dated February 8 1870 included entire blocks bounded by 3rd St NW/South Ave SE/Washtenaw Ave NE & Clinton Rd W today’s business district including Masonic Temple still standing (& recently restored) – cornerstone laid today Saturday afternoon @ 2:30pm amid enthusiastic audience response [see website link below] . . . ."
