It is the third-largest city in Muskegon County and the second-largest city on the east side of Muskegon Lake. The name Roseville comes from a white girl who asked her black friends what their favorite place to go swimming was and they all recommended going to Olivette Park just north of town. Olivette Park had been part of East Lansing until it became a separate municipality in 1871 when Lansing and East Lansing merged into one municipality. When Olivette Park annexed by Roseville in 1907 it was as an unincorporated community with a population of about 100 people. In 1916, the village adopted a resolution proclaiming itself an incorporated community with its own government and post office under the name "Olivette." It lost that status in 1922 when its annexation by Roseville resulted in its current borders. The first post office opened in 1868, serving Olcott (now part of Ann Arbor). The last post office closed in 1984; present day USPS Annexation file numbers for both towns list "Roseville" as their only mailing address. At first blush this might seem like strange trivia since most villages have multiple addresses - but upon closer inspection it's actually quite simple - annexation results are not tracked separately by township or county but instead through municipal boundaries which are then assigned to appropriate US Postal Service annexations files (which contain information on local mail service operations between communities within those boundaries). This means that even though Olcott has long since ceased being an active postal service community (it doesn't appear to be served anymore), Roseville still receives mail from Olcott as if it still does exists! This curious situation arose because at some point during the late 1800s there were two different postal administrations formuskegon county - one based out of downtown Lansing and one based out of Olivette Park...but eventually they merged into one administrative area which is now known as Muskegon County. As residents began moving away from downtown Lansing towards Olivette Park over time their mail stopped arriving at their homes - until finally someone realized that Olivette Park should receive its own mailbox because it still exists as an unincorporated community!

The first settlement in what is now Roseville was called "Beaver Dam", and it was laid out as a town by the Beavers in 1871. It became an incorporated village on July 15, 1903. The townsite of Beaver Dam was bought from the Beavers by George Armstrong Custer for $4 per acre (1/4 pound). Custer had been ordered to retreat by Ulysses S. Grant after his victory at Little Big Horn, and he decided to make camp there while awaiting reinforcements. When news arrived that General Custer's unit had perished near Fort Hays on November 27, 1876, people in Beaver Dam started to organize themselves into a company and seek revenge against the general's murderers. On December 3 they voted to form a regiment of their own and name it the 5th Cavalry Regiment which became Company B of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Michigan Volunteers on January 1, 1877. When World War I began with America's entry into war on April 6, 1917, most of those who had worked hard to create Roseville were filled with patriotism and eagerness for service; many left their homes early one morning to march into battle behind American flags flying from every house and barns in town. Many residents served throughout World War I including three who were awarded Medals of Honor: Private First Class John Pemberton (known as Snake), Private Fifth Class Lewis Aiken (known as Louie) and Sergeant James Mclntyre (known as Jellico). After fighting through trench warfare along France's Somme battlefields before finally being mustered out in 1918 at Versailles after taking more than 200 casualties including 31 KIA or WIA during 16 days of combat - most Rosesvillians went home soon afterwards - many men returned home after Armistice Day 1919 only to find their homes taken over by newly formed businesses such as banks & grocery stores etc.; some families kept their houses until they sold them off around 1925 when all but one family moved away within five years due largely to tough competition from other small towns eastward across Michigans border brought about by increased automobile production bringing jobs with it
